Why Do Artists And Bands Need A Manager?

It is often said that an artist or band needs a manager to handle the various aspects of their career so they can focus on their music, creativity and performance.

There are a number of reasons why having a manager is important to an artist.  But an artist should do their due dilligence to see if hiring a manager is the right decision for them.

The artist needs to understand where they are in their career trajectory.  They may only need help with certain aspects of their career. In that case, they could hire a manager to only handle those aspects, and act as a consultant.

And can the artist afford to hire a manager…does it make financial sense for them?

Here are several reasons why having a manager is crucial for musicians:

Business and Negotiation Skills: Managers typically have a good understanding of the music industry, contracts, and negotiations.  They can help secure favorable deals for the artist in areas such as record contracts, licensing agreements, and performance contracts.

Financial Management: Managers often handle budgeting, financial planning, and negotiation of contracts on behalf of the artist. They may also oversee accounting, including tracking income, expenses, and royalties.

Career Strategy: Managers work closely with the artist to develop long-term career goals and strategies. They provide guidance on creative direction, branding, and opportunities for growth.

Relationship Management: Managers act as intermediaries between the artist and other industry professionals, such as record labels, agents, lawyers, and publicists. They facilitate communication and negotiation to ensure the artist’s interests are represented.

Networking: Managers leverage their industry connections to create opportunities for the artist, such as collaborations, endorsements, and licensing deals.

Strategic Planning: Managers can develop long-term career strategies for the artist, including setting goals, identifying target audiences, and planning for album releases and tours.  They can help artists make decisions that align with their overall career objectives.

Overall, the manager serves as a key advisor and advocate for the artist, working to advance their career and protect their interests in the highly competitive music industry.

The decision to hire a manager should not be taken lightly.  You can talk with other artists who may be in the same place as you, or artists you know who have a manager, and speak with them about their process to hire a manager.

You can also contact artist managers and see if they would be open to having a conversation.  Many managers will take the time to speak with an artist to give advice and guidance.  And there may even be an opportunity to work together.
